Have never seen butcher block counters so dark . . . or with such a sheen on them. You don't suppose that's a counter of another material rather than actual butcher block?? Even if so, I love the look!

Mama Pea :: I have a habit of calling all wood tops butcher block. In my own kitchen, I have a long wooden two-board top that was made on-site of walnut. I gave it 9 coats of poly, sanding between each coat. It is holding up well. I like the look too of the one in the picture.

That is the kitchen of blogger "A Country Farmhouse." You can read all about the butcher block [IKEA] and the stain she used, etc via this blog post:

So pretty! I remember when I had planned to replace my old counter tops, I was going to do butcher block but got swayed and did black. The black is nice, but I regret not going with my first impulse. :) Kit

Kit -- I made a similar mistake with my cottage. I wanted to paint it white but got talked out of it. I wanted 10 years and repainted it white. I wish I had gone with my initial gut feeling. We are too soon old and too late smart. xo, Rosemary

Since this house was featured they sold it and moved to another...would love to see the new one if anyone has any information. The strange thing is that my kitchen where the sink and shelves are is exactly the same...including the sink. I hated the butcher block because it stains horribly so after 25 years I put in marble looking quartz in that area and kept the butcher block around the stove which is across from the sink. Now I have the best of both...love it!

The secret is: trust your first instinct! It is always right!!

Believe me! 47 years as a decorator.......100% of the time.....my first instinct for myself and my clients.....right!

@dogwoods, yes the featured now-sold house was in Pacific Northwest USA; now they've restored a Federal house in Maine, the complicated restoration of which she chronicled exhaustively for several years. Scroll the right margin of her homepage for posts on the PNW house, and posts on the house they're currently in.

Yes, I agree about butcher block. The up-keep is not difficult.A quick wipe of oil once a month and perhaps a bit of light sanding now and then. The kitchen that you posted is one of my all-time favorites. I have followed her postings for years.
