Memorial Day 2017 Lest We Forget

John McCrae, 1872 - 1918
Biography here. More history of the poem here.

IN FLANDERS FIELDS
John McCrae, 1872 - 1918

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place, and in the sky,
The larks, still bravely singing, fly,
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead; short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe!
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high!
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I believe that this is the first time in my life that I have actually read this poem, although I've known about it for years having heard it read aloud when in grade school and perhaps too, on Remembrance Day here in Canada.
It is very poignant and just as moving now, as when it was first written.
Lest we forget.....

Thank you for this. I had the privilege of working for the UK government in Iraq and Afghanistan and attended too many memorial services for military killed in action. I wear my poppy pin every Remembrance Day and try to encourage a break from the Memorial Day 'celebrations' to remember those who were killed or injured fighting for our country.
