Apple Varieties and Their History

I love this ink and watercolor apple chart from Etsy with the place and date of origin. Gail's favorite Gravenstein and Red Gravenstein originated in Denmark in the 1600s. Who knew?

Such a beautiful poster and how interesting that the Gravenstein apple originated in Denmark. All these years of baking with it I thought it came from Germany. My husband is half Danish so this is an interesting bit of information. As always, thanks Rosemary.

Serendipity...your chart with the apples in watercolor, and just today I called the grocery store to see if they had received the Gravensteins from Gowan's Orchards in Philo.

The produce clerk said, "Yes, we have. Boxes." I laughed and told him, "Yay! You just made my day."

Our family is getting together for Labor Day and I promised our son I'd make the potato salad and two apple pies but only if I could find the Gravenstein apples. ;-)

I hope someday you're able to find and taste a Gravenstein apple, Rosemary. You'll be spoiled forever.

Gail...I'll let you know if I ever find "your" apple. Your Labor Day fest (feast) sounds wonderful. Are you sure two pies will be enough?

Two enough? Not as far as my son is concerned. If they're good enough for dinner, they're even better the next morning for breakfast---that's his motto. ;-)

Gail....Your son's logic sounds perfectly reasonable to me. I think you'd better bake 4 pies. Do you make your own crust?

Gail - you're right once you've made a pie with the Gravensteins you are spoiled forever. I hope Rosemary can find them too. It was fun reading your comments about your son loving your potato salad and apple pie. My son also requested my potato salad for his 40th birthday party this month. And instead of an apple pie, as I've often made him for his bday, this year I made him an apple cake made with the Gravenstein apples from my sister's tree. We live in Santa Rosa - are you in Sonoma County?
