Mystery Fruit/Vegetable

I saw these in a big bin at an indoor Farm Market recently and wondered what they were. Any ideas?

Dragon fruit. Similar to a kiwi and very nutritional.

Deb -- Thank you. I think I'll buy a few and try a new taste. I'm sure I'll like them if they are anything like kiwi fruit.

Yes, it is a dragon fruit. I've never tasted it, but the colours are fantastic.

They look like purple kohlrabi to me. I've grown both the white and the purple but the white grow better for me for some reason. We love kohlrabi as a raw veggie in salads or with dip.

I'm not familiar with dragon fruit so perhaps it's a kohlrabi look-a-like?

Well, I think I have to eat my previous (kohlrabi) comment! My curiosity was piqued and I Googled dragon fruit. Sure enough, they look exactly like your picture. Just goes to show I can learn something every day, thanks to Deb for knowing of what she speaks!

Mama Pea....Kohlrabi was my first thought when I saw it only this is bigger. I used to grow it back in the mid 1970s when I had a big garden. I loved its crunchiness. Now I want to try dragon fruit.

Indeed, it is Dragon Fruit. Very decorative both in and out.

When you slice into it, it is white with black speckled dots (sort of like pepper). It is quite mild in flavour and when sliced ~ 1/4" thick & then in smaller segments, it is a nice surprise ingredient in a salad. It is also refreshing to just snack on the wedges. Even better if cool, as from a refrigerator.

Others beat me to it -- Dragon fruit. I enjoy making interesting and unusual jams, and have been wanting to use this fruit for a jam, just based on the interesting colors & texture.

Here's some info on it... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitaya

I loved reading all the comments, it was like being back in school. I suppose the test is to buy this dragon fruit and eat it.

They are similar to phitayas. Here in Colombia we have plenty. They are very sweet but the seeds are mildly laxative.
