Orange Sections For Breakfast

This was my breakfast dessert. I never drink orange juice anymore since I heard how it was processed on NPR. What? You haven't heard? Well, the stuff you get in cartons in the grocery store was stored in vats for up to one year after the oxygen was removed so it wouldn't spoil. Then when they get ready to reconstitute it, it is absolutely tasteless so they have to add flavor to make it taste like oranges again. Yuck. I couldn't find the NPR article but I found this for you to read. Eating a real orange is the only way to go, right?
I found a link to help you with orange juice brands:

Thanks I didn't know about the orange juice packaging.

Barbara...The NPR program had a woman who has written a book about the orange juice industry. From now on, I'm just eating the fruit. No carton to throw in the landfill either so it's a win, win.

Here is the link to an article from WNYC 93.9FM radio that quotes the author, Alissa Hamilton, of, "Squeezed, What You Don't Know About Orange Juice."

I remember hearing that too. I thought I remembered that they grind the whole orange up because the peel gives it some of the flavor that is lost during storage. I poked around a bit and found this quote:
"Consumers are also becoming more health-conscious about sugar intake. “A small glass of orange juice contains 20 grams of sugar, that’s five teaspoons in one glass,” Hamilton said. In contrast, an orange contains 13 grams of sugar, as well as fiber." They also mention the loss of vitamin C as it sits. All in all, a real orange is best. Next we worry about the demise of bananas.

I've never been able to drink orange juice, it's too acidic for me. It's always better to eat unprocessed food and usually so much tastier….oh, and almost always better for you. That's a tasty looking photo Rosemary.

Beautiful photograph of the oranges on the black transferware plate. Was the plate made by Doulton or Adams, by any chance? It's wonderful!

Out on my errands this morning, I discovered that Whole Foods carries the Odwalla Orange Juice which is "Flash Pasteurized," "100% Pure Squeezed," and "Not From Concentrate." Comes in a bottle which is made of 100% renewable material. $2.69 for a 12 oz. bottle. This would seem a much better product than the "carton" variety. I find one of the unfortunate things about trying to eat healthy(ier) is that many people who would benefit greatly simply cannot afford to buy or do not have access to the healthier products. We can only give it our best try. :-)

Very interesting! I don't drink juice because you miss out on the fiber and get all the calories. But I am glad to know about that! Love the colors in this picture.
