The Future

Show this to a young person. The key word is "few". Somebody's got to do it, right? I've never been afraid of getting my hands dirty and I've always admired people who work with their hands. via

I don't want to sound all pessimistic, but I think a great part of the problems with our society today is that so few people want to W-O-R-K anymore. They don't know how nor are they the least bit interested in learning. When did most folks come to believe they deserve it all without having to do some honest, nitty-gritty work? There is such a sense of pride in doing work in which you do get dirty and feel a stretch of your muscles. (Then there's always that lovely bath or shower afterwards!)

Well said Mama Pea. I remember about 25 years ago having some friends over for dinner and the wife was horrified that I didn't put on rubber gloves to wash my dishes, she said, "Your hands are going to be ruined." I told her that at the end of my life I wanted people to look at my hands and know that I had used them well. One of the great blessings of my life is that my parents taught me and my 6 siblings how to work hard and use our hands. My hands have short fingernails, some wrinkles and age spots. I've convinced some of my young grand children that the spots on my right hand are really a secret map of the US.

I love using my hands for yard work and chores around the house. I'm not sure young people always understand this, but I'm happy to say our two sons aren't afraid to get their hands dirty. There are probably a few youngsters out there that "get" it.

In Response to Mama Pea:

I think part of the mentality of holding one's 'clean hand out and expecting handouts' is that we have created a society of giving things away without effort. Children are getting awards just for the sake of participating, not for trying to do their best. Where is the incentive to succeed in that?

I also believe there is a generation that felt so deprived, they are turning around and over compensating with their own children in an effort to not be like their parents.

On another note: In Response to Karen: My son also loves to get his hands dirty and is always eager to help around the house, no matter what the chore is. I can't wait to be on my homestead getting my hands dirty in the way of providing food for my family. There is such reward in accomplishing tasks, seeing the before and after, knowing it was you. I believe more and more people will begin to slowly turn to creating for themselves.

As a young person....:) I agree many of the recent generation coming into adulthood lost touch with using their hands and making things but I also see many who are returning to it. Just look at the popularity of canning, knitting and gardening. I think young people are bored and dissatified with not accomplishing anything tangible. I think there will be a resurgence of craftsmanship. Everybody loves to say 'look what I made!'

Dirty hands?

My whole body gets dirty. And I stink too.

It's how I make my money, and beautiful homes & gardens.

Proud of my filth & smell.
