Yes, with some great memories. As a child when I would visit my grandmother, we would take the wire basket to gather the eggs before breakfast, only after we read the Upper Room. Can remember what a treat it was to stick my hand under the warm soft chicken sitting on her nest to pick up the egg. Kind a like putting your hand in a heated cashmere lined glove. Then we would head back to the house for her to fix us dippin' eggs.

Dawn and Rachy...

You two are so lucky.

Dawn....I love your description of what it feels like to gather fresh eggs. You and your grandmother had some very special times together.

I have 3 lovely lady chickens named Agnes, Thelma and Louise. It is interesting to collect an egg that is "chicken temperature."

I too gathered eggs from my grandparents hens; my cousins and I loved doing it. I always felt a little guilty though like I was taking the hen's prized possession.

I grew up eating fresh homemade food. My siblings and I thought a loaf of Wonder Bread was such a treat, we'd get it about once a year, otherwise it was always homemade bread. When I was 6,7, and 8 years old it was my job to carry a 2 qt milk can and walk up the street to get milk from my uncle. He had a few cows and some mornings I would stand in his barn while he milked the cow. I don't think I drank pasteurized milk until I was about 11 years old.

Recently a young friend brought me a dozen eggs from her free range hens, such a delicious treat. They looked a lot like the ones in your picture.

R, thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I've never had a fresh egg either, but I hear they are much better tasting then store bought eggs. These look great.
