A Kitchen to Adore

I absolutely adore this Los Angeles kitchen belonging to fashion designer Heidi Merrick. The vintage white porcelain stove is wonderful. The simple white cabinets with white marble countertops are perfect. And have you ever seen a better stack of wooden cutting boards? See more rooms here.

Maybe I'm missing something (out of the picture), Rosemary, but tell me how a kitchen like this do without a vent/fan for the stove? I see pictures like this frequently.

I find fascinating and appealing the seamless blending of indoors/outdoors, private (sleeping) and public entertaining spaces with work centers mixed in. Well done, bright, happy, clean.
Thanks for sharing another goody, Rosemary.
Happy Twelfth Night.

So how do you reach those frying pans hanging so close to the ceiling? And who is going to clean the grease and particulates off those packets and jars stored close to the stove? Isn't that a bit dangerous, storing things in such a way that the cook must reach across hot surfaces to access them? The other rooms are not much better. This is not a convenient home, but it is photographed charmingly.

JudyMac....

I see lots of older kitchens without exhaust fans. Years ago, people just opened the window. My own fan does not exhaust to the outside. I rarely turn it on but it has an automatic sensor that turns it on automatically if it feels too hot.

Maybe there is one in the wall that we can't see. Like the ones used in restaurants.

Love this simple kitchen. I had a stove just like this in the kitchen while growing up. We had no exhaust fan, just opened the window. There was a dutch door out the back and we would open the top of it as well. I was never able to find the right pot rack to suspend pots in my current house. So, I sawed off the ends of an old broom, sanded off the paint and rounded the ends to reveal very nice wood. I rubbed several coats of tung oil on and used chain and hooks from the hardware store to complete the project. This pot rack resembles mine. It looks great with all the pots and dried items hanging. No one would know how simple and inexpensive the project had been.

best,

I want to see your pot rack. Have you ever featured it on your blog? It sounds wonderful and I'm sure you had a great time making it.

Happy New Year.

This is the stove I had growing up so I'm going to ask my mom about the venting.

I looked at the blue bed and thought "painter's tape,". Oops.
