I really like paintings in the kitchen. This is a great example with open shelves and ironstone. So pretty.

It is elegantly casual - can I say that?
It is warm and inviting and cleverly arranged... without contrivance.

A nice way to display and view favourite artworks among functional pieces.

To me, I imagine the conversation like this, "would you like a coffee, I've some brewing?"

Or, "some lovely, fresh melon on this beautiful morning? Oh, I picked that little piece up in the antiques store last week, yes it is lovely."

An evocative image and an imagined glimpse into someone's world, if only for a minute :)

There you go with the open shelving again. There must be a reason that you're drawn to that style even though you know in your heart of hearts it's impractical.

Gail...

You are right. I am drawn to the open shelves because of the display possibilities. These are especially nice and well thought out since they are set in a tile wall. Have a great weekend.

The white on white is lovely and the old oil paintings are the perfect backdrops.

The whole scene is very inviting.

Those lovely paintings are beautiful and they look so nice where they are placed. I love the whole arrangement.

Have a nice weekend.

ha! i love vicki's little vignette of a comment. some of my favorite memories are of hearing my mother say "come in! the coffee's on."
and...
i have to admit to one and all here
yes. my name is tammy j. and i'm an own of open shelves in my kitchen.
i love them! and they don't get as dusty as you think... i use everything almost everyday so it stays clean. i keep them very uncluttered tho. just white dishes.
now my secret's out.
i worried. 'cause so many thought they'd be dusty or dirty.
surprisingly not! smiles and hugs to all you doubters. lol.

Thanks for your tip. Grass doesn't grow on a busy street and dust doesn't settle on open shelves if you use the items daily.

I love and use art in the kitchen, but I'm reluctant to use it there unless it's covered by glass or in a form which can be easily cleaned. Eventually, most anything will collect kitchen grime, particularly if you have no vent over the cooking area.

Part of my shelves are open, part are covered by glass. Like another reader, the items in my open shelves are used daily.

I agree. You would have to rotate unprotected artwork and leave it there for a short time or after all the cooking was done. My open shelves in the pantry are for displaying antique platters and other collections and the shelves are always dusty because there are two windows in there. Green tree pollen is my biggest enemy.

tammy j,

open shelves can be beautiful in the kitchen. And, as you said, when the items are used every day, the surfaces are easy to keep clean with a quick wipe.

I have a mix of closed cupboards and open shelves and like to display arty items among them. Window sills, they can get dusty too if unattended, but rarely do I hear people complain about them and yet they are often used to display herbs or other items of interest.

One thing, never make excuses or apologise for your decor preferences. For, if you love it a certain way, you'll take care of it :)
