Coney Island | Weegee, 1940

Standing Room only on the beach at Coney Island in 1940! I wonder if this vintage photo was taken on July 4th? I hope you are able to find a less crowded spot to enjoy this long holiday weekend commemorating America's Independence Day.

I suppose, in the days before most people had access to air-conditioning this seemed the only relief from the heat, so these New Yorkers put up with being this crammed onto a beach?? Mind boggling to me that anyone could stand this, just the same!

This beach day on Coney Island looks so NOT fun to me although I'm sure for the these folks it was good to be near or in the water. NYC can still be so hot and miserable in the summer. That is one very crowded beach, must be the the 4th of July.
